What's your personal rule for max deadhead on a reload?

Had this argument with another driver at the Flying J this morning and want more opinions. He says never deadhead more than 50 miles, period, it's free work. I say it depends what's waiting — I'll run 120 empty to grab a reefer load that pays $2.60 all week vs staying put for $1.90 freight. My rough rule: deadhead is fine if the loaded rate covers the empty miles and still beats the local average by 10%+. Am I overcomplicating it?

Blend the miles. If it's 120 empty + 800 loaded at $2.60, your real rate is $2.26 on 920 total. Compare THAT to the $1.90 you'd take locally. Numbers stop the argument every time.
